Results of the Richmond Virginia local elections are due to be announced in 2020, with polls likely to be key indicators of the Democratic Party’s prospects for winning back the state.
After massive protests and nationwide support for the cause against President Donald Trump, in only one city in Virginia, Washington DC, was passed a local legislation approving erecting a wall of steel bars on the US-Mexico border.
In Virginia itself, Hillary Clinton’s former vice-president Joe Biden is considered a leading contender to become the Democratic Party’s standard-bearer in 2020.
However, a poll for the Washington Post this week saw Biden taking just 30% of the vote in the Democratic primary, and a recent result by pollsters Emerson showed him with just 11% of support against his closest rival, Joe Lhota.
Trump was in town this weekend, leading some to speculate that he is looking for an excuse to get back to DC to campaign against Democrats in the local elections. It is also the home to George W Bush’s former vice-president Dick Cheney, a man who has repeatedly criticised any talk of impeaching the President.
