In 2016, images of four armored trucks and eight individual military hardware tanks, some modified to bear the standarded Ethiopian flag, surfaced online.
They looked almost identical to another armored vehicle manufactured in the United Arab Emirates.
Then last year, a yet more potent variant of the same military vehicle was shown. The Vespasian is identical to the UAE tank but the Ethiopian variant has a full horizontal curved turret, as well as an anti-aircraft gun on top.
Facebook user “Avicem” claimed responsibility for posting these photographs, claiming it was an example of “industrial espionage.”
However, a major investigation launched by AFP concluded that the Aliph photos were no hoax and had been posted on social media by the Ethiopian Defence Forces.
According to AFP, they were part of an attempt to discredit the country’s newly-formed anti-terrorist task force during a period of war with neighboring Eritrea.
